The Intensive Care Unit is a specialized area within the hospital that provides intensive medical care to patients with serious illnesses or injuries who require constant care and monitoring.
The Intensive Care Unit provides services such as mechanical ventilation, cardiac and respiratory monitoring, intravenous medication administration, and advanced life support, among others, with the goal of stabilizing and improving the condition of critically ill patients.
Patients with serious illnesses or injuries that require intensive care and constant monitoring—such as those with cardiac, respiratory, or neurological problems, or those with complicated postoperative conditions, among others—may be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
The length of a patient's stay in the Intensive Care Unit can vary depending on the severity of their illness or injury. Some patients may require only a few days of intensive care, while others may need weeks or even months of specialized care.
The Intensive Care Unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team: intensivists, nurses specializing in intensive care, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists, who are responsible for providing comprehensive and specialized care to critically ill patients.
